A book shortlisted for the Costa award is the work of two Brighton graduates.

Illustrator Dave Shelton who studied MA Sequential Illustration at the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts between 1997 and 1999, has been shortlisted in the Children’s Book category of the Costa Awards for his debut novel A Boy, a Bear and a Boat which he wrote and illustrated.
Shelton worked on the book in collaboration with fellow faculty graduate and freelancer, Ness Wood, to design the cover, layout and overall look. Wood has also worked with authors such as Shirley Hughes, Anthony Browne and Mini Grey - another Brighton graduate.
Wood who has already completed a BA in History of Design and an MA in History of Design and Material Culture, starts her PhD in January 2013, focussing on Green Shield and Co-operative Stamps.
Commenting on A Boy, a Bear and a Boat, the short listing judges said: "This enchanting story has the feel of a classic children’s tale.”
Shelton has illustrated comics and comic books, including Good Dog, Bad Dog, which won the Leeds Graphic Novel Award 2010 and was last year, was longlisted for both the prestigious Kate Greenaway and the Carnegie Book awards.
A Boy, a Bear and a Boat is published by David Fickling Books and the Costa prize winners will be announced on 29 January 2013.
