KENTE CLOTH; from sacred to profane
This collection looks at the journey of an indigenous west African cloth known as kente, from its once sacred royal consumption within Ghana to its current state of profane use globally. Thorough research investigating its stages of transition as well as market research on trends, new meanings and use of the cloth not only revealed the reasons for this transition but also helped to inform the final outcome of this collection where yarn, texture, density/ weight, and overall aesthetic were considered. This research piece brought to light the need to restore some traditional concepts back into this indigenous cloth as well as its form of use, hence concluding in an informed decision on target client; that being royals.
