Mission statement
Research News is a publication aiming to inform faculty and university colleagues as well as external partners about the research community and research activities taking place in the College of Arts and Humanities. Research News is published twice a year by the Centre for Research & Development.
Criteria for submissions
Submissions should be representative of faculty research and of its quality, as a showcase for research.
Submissions should aim for readers to understand the featured research and its context, so the featured research should always be situated its wider research issues and in its field.
Whether featuring work in progress, completed work, review of events or conference, other researchers and their work (interviews for instance), the article should focus on the research element of the news, expanding on the research issues, questions, methodologies and wider context, as a mechanism for readers to understand the research. For instance, if you wish to write about an exhibition which featured your work, the article should focus on the research that went into your featured work, and how that linked with the research of your co-exhibitors.
Submissions should normally be written in the third person (unless an interview or conversational piece); personal quotes in the first person can be included.
Submissions should be written and formatted according to the guidelines provided. A standard article would normally be about 450-550 words, while a featured article is up to 1,500 words. Pieces for the Staff/ Student News section should be between 100 and 250 words, focus on events and avoid biographical extras (you may want to add these to your website pages instead). Articles regarding future research-related events will now be published online on the CRD website. If you are submitting an article about a forthcoming conference or event, you should provide an outline of the event and its programme as well as full details of dates, times and how to book.
Good Practice Guide
It is good practice for an article to include the following:
1. A brief introduction about the featured researcher: name, title, school, whether they teach on any of our courses, the area of their research interests.
2. A paragraph about the item of news which might have sparked off the article (exhibition, performance, publication, conference, etc), its full title, location, date, audience captured, etc.
3. The main body of the article, explaining the research that went into the above, situating it in its wider field and alongside its competitors/ colleagues, elaborating on research questions and methodologies.
4. A concluding paragraph focusing on the attention the research has attracted, for instance funding received, reviews, quotes, invitations to further work, links to other projects, networks, etc.
5. Images should always accompany the article and be submitted with suitable captions. It is the responsibility of the author to seek permission to publish any images before they are sent to Research News. Please supply your images in JPG, Photoshop, TIFF or EPS format. Image dimensions should be at least 150mm on their longest side (preferably bigger). Image resolution should be no less than 300dpi.
All articles will be concluded by a short identification note (e.g. XX is a Lecturer in the School of YY) and/ or by a website address relating to their relevant research portfolio page, as a means to identify their author.
