Exhibition
Brighton Photo Biennial, the UK’s largest international photography festival, returns for its sixth edition.
For BPB14, they have broken with the single curator model and instead have worked in close partnership with a host of regional, national and international collaborators to develop a series of new projects on the theme of Communities, Collectives & Collaboration. BPB14 embraces novel perspectives and fresh approaches to generate commissions, new work and represent archive material.
Designed to inspire, challenge and celebrate the most democratic medium of our age, BPB14 takes place online and in public spaces, galleries and pop-up venues across Brighton & Hove and beyond, involving more than 45 photographers and collaborators all bound by a common approach.
The core programme takes place throughout October and offers a packed schedule of workshops, talks, screenings and other events to complement the exhibitions, ensuring everyone – whatever their level of interest or expertise, can participate in BPB14.

North Gallery: So Like You
Working in collaboration with online communities, Scourti sets out to make sense of the overload of images online and how personal snapshots collide and mingle with millions of others through social platforms.
So Like You highlights the tensions between individual and collective authorship in network culture. How can a creative individual be recognised as unique, when Instagram has made everyone’s photos look the same? What value has a snapshot once it’s uploaded and absorbed into a larger ‘cloud’ of image data?

South Gallery
Established art duo, Cornford & Cross, together with artist Andrew Lacon, explore the dialogue between photography and sculpture in Plane Materials.
Lacon’s studio based practice draws on historical documents and photographs from the Library of Birmingham’s archive that are specifically concerned with Roman antiquity and the framing of photographs of Roman sculpture.
Waste House
One Planet Living in Partnership with Fotodocument
Ten photo essays responding to the ten sustainability principles of One Planet Living with ten site-specific installations in public spaces across Brighton & Hove.
Commissioned by FotoDocument in partnership with Photoworks and Bioregional, and selected from an open call, ten established and emerging photographers have been supported in the making of these commissions over the summer through the expertise of environmental specialists at Brighton & Hove City Council and other One Planet Living partner organisations.
Circus Street
Five Contemporary Photography Collectives
An exploration of collaborative working methods, with five very different contemporary photography collectives.
These contemporary views on photography provide a route into current conversations around the resurgence of photography collectives. Invited for their varying styles and their approaches to working together, ABC, Burn My Eye, RUIDO Photo, Sputnik Photos and Uncertain States outline the impact of this way of working, nationally and internationally. Considered here is the dynamic, democratic process of navigating and negotiating a cohesive voice through the notion of a collective.
UoB Café/Foyer

Since 1937 anonymous individuals have submitted entries documenting their everyday lives to the Mass Observation Archive creating an unparalleled collective portrait of British society.

Real Britain 1974 Co-optic and Documentary Photography
Uncovering a lost episode in the development of British social documentary photography, this exhibition explores how the Co-Optic group attempted to establish an authentic representation of 1970s Britain.
By 1974, documentary realism had a special prominence in English television, film and photography. The Co-Optic group laid claim to combine the new ‘independent photography’ inspired by US examples, with the style and forms of 60s photo-journalism.
