5th Feb 2013 - 14th Feb 2013
University Gallery
Patcham High School
Led by Irene Mensah
2nd year undergraduates from the Faculty of Art Community Arts Practice at Patcham High School, in connection with Widening Participation.
An installation will be exhibited which is a collaboration between the two groups, with the University students facilitating and supporting the Year 8 group of school students to develop their existing understanding of art and to work together in partnership to make the work. The University students who participate come from a wide range of departments: Photography, Sculpture, Graphics and Illustration, Critical Fine Art Practice, Performance and Visual Art and Painting.
This year the concept of the project will be based on books, tying in with the school’s drive to encourage an improvement in literacy and active reading. By working to create art, which responds to its eventual site, the work will explore the nature of installations working with and being influenced by the space it occupies and how the viewer will see it. There will also be an emphasis on introducing the way in which artists create books, and to use text and books as a catalyst for creating 2-D and 3-D art which will explore narrative, spatial awareness and the transformative ability of art to take an everyday object and explore the multiple layers of the invisible and the personal. Use of recycled materials will continue the development of environmental awareness from the last project.
