Silver Stories

An exhibition of digital stories and portraits of the storytellers from six European countries

Silver Stories is an exhibition of digital stories created by participants from six European countries (UK, Romania, Slovenia, Denmark, Finland, Portugal)

Portraits of the tellers, together with an explanation of why they told their story will accompany the two-minute films. Each country will have six different films to view, selected out of the many they have made over the two-year research partnership led by the University of Brighton.

They are the product of the Silver Stories Research partnership (2013 – 2015) which sought to bring digital storytelling to community groups and elderly people. The term Digital Storytelling describes a simple, creative process through which people with little or no experience of computers, gain skills needed to tell a personal story as a two-minute film using predominantly still images that can be streamed on the web, broadcast on television, or exhibited in a gallery. The stories are deeply personal and sometimes this is the first time they have been told. Usually narrated by the storyteller, they chronicle everything from school days to celebrating much loved pets, mourning the loss of a loved one, or the difficulties of caring for someone with Alzheimer's.

Silver Stories is the research and training partnership of nine organisations, led by the University of Brighton, behind the storytelling workshops. It brings together expertise in digital storytelling, community engagement and education to train professionals working with community groups and elderly people. It then goes on to explore the process of digital storytelling through a consideration of the stories gathered.

The most immediate tangible outcomes of Silver Stories will be the collaborative development of new pedagogic materials for Vocational Education and Training, the training of a pool of new trainers through a workshop programme and the creation of digital stories.

Private View – Thursday 6 August 6pm – 8pm. 

There will be a special event as part of the exhibition to which older people from the community will be invited to view some of the stories, and get together for some tea and gourmet cakes on Monday 10 August at 3pm.
