Two years ago the Brighton Fuse project showed hard evidence of the vitality and growth of the Brighton Creative-Digital-IT cluster of firms. Referred to by government ministers and used to develop new investments like the £170m City Deal and the Digital Catapult Centre, the research raised the profile of the cluster and the role of creative-technical ‘fusion’ as well as identifying barriers to further growth.
This event presents intriguing new research results from a follow-up survey answering questions like:
• have businesses continued to grow, or have they declined?
• Has the skills gap problem got worse, or better?
• Even if businesses generate revenues, are they profitable? The ‘value capture’ problem.
• What business models are most popular? And how do these affect revenues?
• How many businesses have closed in the cluster in the last 2 years?
• How do app developers really make money?
We show some surprising new data that reveals the ‘ongoing health’ of the cluster in this exciting mix of arts, humanities, and technology. The event will discuss the Brighton cluster in the context of the creative economy as a whole, with guest speakers from other centres like Manchester and Brussels.
Sponsored by the ESRC Festival of Social Science, the European Commission FP7 project “Unveiling Creativity for Innovation in Europe’ (CRE8TV.EU), and promoted by Wired Sussex. Brighton Fuse was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
