An internationally renowned pipa and guqin soloist from Beijing, China, Cheng performs regularly with the UK Chinese Ensemble.
Both the pipa (a fretted four-string lute) and the guqin (an unfretted seven-string zither) have a history of over 2,000 years. Pipa music is famed for its richness of expression, extremes of mood, sophisticated techniques and range of styles including civil (wen) and martial (wu).
Guqin music has a rich and unusual sound. It is frequently referred to in early Japanese literature, such as the Genji Monogatari (Tale of Genji) and was reintroduced from China by the Zen priest Shin Etsu in the 17th century. Cheng Yu presents a rare opportunity to hear a selection of classical pieces from the repertoires of these two instruments.
