In the music performed by John Mayer’s orchestra, the widely differing elements of eastern and western music and cultures are combined.
Introducing jazz, classical and Indian music to each other using some of the structures and sonic patterns of Indian music as a framework for jazz musicians to improvise on.
Some 25 years after the original band parted company, John Mayer has reformed the Indo-Jazz Fusions with a new line-up, and they are recording and performing once again. This new ensemble consists of John Mayer himself on sitar, Harjinder Matharu on tabla, James McDowell on flute, Carlos Lopez-Real on saxophone, Dave Smith on trumpet, Simon Colam on piano, David Foster on bass and Andy Bratt on drums.
"There’s not the isolation that there was before.. there is now a closeness in the band which is so nice." Translating Indian techniques from, for example, the sitar to the keyboard, or the tabla to drums
