Headed by Magic Malik (of the Buena Vista Social Club fame), the Orchestra push further the boundaries of NU Jazz incorporating various musical styles and melodic undertones of his notorious singing flute. Magic Malik himself is, to put it mildly, a master. His presence on the stage is awe-inspiring as both flautist and vocalist.
Malik’s falsetto is hauntingly beautiful twisting and turning through the Arabic scales like a snake charmers prize cobra. His singing flute is also legendary, attracting leading music critics to scribble furiously for London’s major music press after his Royal Albert hall performances with the Buena Vista Social Club. Guesting with Julien Lourau (French NU Jazz pioneer) Malik totally stunned a Packed Jazz Café with his stage antics and improvisation with beer bottles filled to different levels with water. This is a performer that is truly worth his weight.
For those who like things a little more uplifting the Magic Malik Orchestra provide ample live Drum and Bass Rhythm’s alongside easy grooves, Jazz and at points sheer weirdness.
