Michael Hulls is a highly acclaimed lighting designer working in contemporary dance. He has worked with choreographers Jonathan Burrows, (The Stop Quartet and for Ballett Frankfurt) and American choreographer Meg Stuart, (Deutsche Oper Ballett and for Mikhail Baryshnikov's "White Oak Project" in the US) amongst others. He has also collaborated on projects with composers Kevin Volans and Gavin Bryars, artists Anish Kapoor, Bruce Mau and Duncan MacAskill, and architect Nigel Coates. His close working relationship with choreographer Russell Maliphant has resulted in collaborations, including "Shift", "Two", "Unspoken" and "Critical Mass". These have won international critical acclaim for developing a language born out of the interaction between light and movement.
In 2001 as part of the Year of the Artist, Michael created his own light and video gallery installation, Shadowspace, working with dancer Anna Williams and composer Andy Cowton. In recognition of his contribution in the field of lighting design, he was nominated for an Arts Foundation Fellowship.Michael trained in dance and theatre at Dartington College of Arts and in 1992 was awarded a bursary by the Arts Council to study lighting design with Jennifer Tipton in New York and Paris.
