'Bent' is a hugely significant and thought provoking piece of drama, portraying the issues around the treatment of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. The play was first performed at London's Royal Court Theatre in 1979 and starred Ian McKellen and Tom Bell. McKellen won the award for Best Actor in a New Play from The Society of West End Theatres for his performance as Max. The play itself caused an uproar but whilst being controversial, audiences responded emotionally and intellectually to the subject matter, and were affected by the strength of the writing. Since made into a successful big screen movie by FilmFour, 'Bent' is a rollercoaster ride through the emotions and serves to remind people of the evils faced by homosexuals in all too recent history.
