A symposium to coincide with the ‘Stitching for Survival’ exhibition at the University of Brighton Gallery (29 Sept - 31 Oct), featuring the work of Michele Walker. (See Exhibitions.)
This multidisciplinary symposium will have a particular focus on dress and textiles but will also explore other aspects of contemporary artistic and cultural production and their relationship with Japanese traditions.
Speakers include: textile artist Michele Walker who will discuss her recent textile installations made in response to her first hand research into sashiko; Jennifer Harris (The Whitworth Art Gallery), Curator of the Indigo exhibition, who will make connections between the two exhibitions; Jane Harris (Senior Research Fellow, Central St Martins), whose research combines both historical dress and video work; Professor Sarah Chaplin (Kingston University), widely known for her research and writing on Japanese culture and architecture, Professor Fran Lloyd, curator, researcher and writer on contemporary Japanese art and Catherine Harper (University of Brighton), researcher and writer on textiles, who will offer an alternative series of readings for Japanese cloth culture.
