Carey Young will discuss a number of her works which relate to ideas of protest, rhetoric and the avant-garde, particularly in the light of their co-option by globalised business. She will also discuss related themes in her practice such as legal ‘grey areas’, the non-activist artist and the ‘activated’ audience, and developing playful and perverse relationships with power.
Born in 1970 in Zambia, Young's artistic work employs a variety of media, including photography, video and performance. She often explores themes such as portraiture, landscape and the sublime by using found tools and language from the worlds of the multinational corporation or global law firm. Her particular focus for the last decade has been the ‘corporate takeover’ of individual subjectivity and the public domain, and the contemporary role of the artist.
Young studied at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, and is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at London College of Communication. Her current exhibition Memento Park is at mimaMiddlesborough until July 2011. Past exhibitions include Contracting Universe, New York, 2010; Carey Young: Uncertain Contracts, Rhode Island, 2009; Speech Acts, St. Louis ,2009; Counter Offer, Toronto, 2009; and Business as Usual, Southampton, 2001.
