CityCamp Brighton will bring together local government, businesses, community organisations and academia to reimagine the ways in which collaboration and web technologies will shape the future of our city.
CityCamp is a series of events, first started in Chicago, focused on innovation for government and community organisations in our cities. Each CityCamp has four main goals:
- Bring together government officials, municipal employees, experts, programmers, designers, citizens and journalists to share perspectives and insights about the cities in which they live
- Create or maintain government transparency and effective local governance using the web as a platform
- Foster communities of practice and advocacy on the role of information and open data in cities
- Create outcomes that participants will act on during and after the event
CityCamp explores and documents ideas, lessons learned and best practices that can be implemented within and shared across municipalities, anywhere in the world. Of particular interest is the use of social/participatory media, mobile devices, linked open data and the idea of the “Web as a platform.”
CityCamp recognises that local government, businesses and community organisations have the most direct influence and impact on our daily lives. This events look to create local communities of practice who are dedicated to design, process, and technology applications that make cities more open and “user friendly.”
CityCamp Brighton is designed for active audiences and split into three days of discussions, workshops and hands-on design, largely created and led by attendees. The format of the event is designed for action and as a launchpad for ongoing innovation and participation between otherwise disconnected groups in the city.
CityCamp Brighton is produced by three Brighton-based organisations: The Democratic Society, NixonMcInnes and Public-i, in collaboration with CityCamp.
The first CityCamp was held in Chicago, Illinois, 23-24 January, 2010. The first UK City Camp was held in London in October, 2010.
