Anthony McCall is an internationally renowned artist. He is known for his ‘solid-light’ installations: a series of ephemeral works that he began in 1973 with his seminal Line Describing a Cone, in which a volumetric form composed of projected light slowly evolves in three-dimensional space. McCall’s work crosses the disciplines of fine art, film, sculpture and performance with central concerns of the body in space and the omnipresence of the moving image in our lives. Most recently McCall has included sound in his work; the sonic environment operates as a just-audible ‘shroud’. Working in a zone between sculpture, cinema and drawing, his work’s historical importance has been internationally recognized in such exhibitions as “Beyond Cinema: the Art of Projection” at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2006-7) and “The Geometry of Motion 1920s/1970s”, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008). Most recently McCall won a commission for a public art project Projected Column to be installed in the Mersey docks near Liverpool.
Anthony McCall's installation will be on show in the Performance Studio on 13/14 November.
