‘My best friend died a few years ago and it broke my heart. I miss my friend and I wonder where he is.’
The sudden and tragic loss of James, who was in his thirties, changed the way Marcus felt about the world. It didn’t stop him being an athiest, if anything it galvanised the suspicion that we are, in fact, alone in the universe, but it made him think.
He’s a Dad and a husband and he’s funny for a living but he also feels sad and frustrated quite often. Who can he talk to now James is gone? What about, well, God? But does He exist? Can He actually help us?
‘If you’re confused then, for goodness’ sake, don’t expect me to lead you anywhere: I’m as lost as you are. It would be an exercise in breathtaking arrogance to suggest I might have any answers for anyone else. I’m a comedian, not an academic, though I do have a BTEC in performing arts so don’t dismiss me entirely.’
Based on Marcus’ award-winning Edinburgh and West End show of the same name, God Collar explores religion, his need for it, his lack of it, the myths surrounding it and the bits that he whole-heartedly disagrees with within it. It is a scathing look at modern faith that will leave you laughing out loud and examining your own beliefs in equal measure.
