The Monday Lecture series (since 1997) consists of presentations by contemporary artists and cultural practitioners who work across disciplines. This is an opportunity to hear artists, writers, cultural activists talk about the history of their practice and show examples of their work. The lecture series is curated by
Mine Kaylan as part of the Faculty of Arts' public lecture programme.
February 4th Steven Brett
Born in Australia in 1965, Steven began dance training at the age of 11 in north Queensland. At 15 he left home to train at the Victorian College of the Arts before moving to the Australian Ballet School two years later. A series of knee operations meant a year out to study environmental studies. During a tour of Australia by Nederlands Dans Theatre in 1986 Jiri Kylian offered him a place in the junior company, NDTII.
In 1988 Steven joined Rambert Dance Company, under Richard Alston where he stayed as a dance for 10 years, later working with Christopher Bruce. In the latter years he began working as a rehearsal director a role which became full time when he stopped performing. In 2000 Steven was appointed Associate Artistic Director to Christopher Bruce, a role he remained in during the first years of Mark Baldwin’s time as Artistic Director.
In 15 years working with Rambert on both sides of the curtain Steven worked with such luminaries as Richard Alston, Christopher Bruce, Merce Cunningham, Glen Tetley, Trisha Brown, Siobhan Davies, Twyla Tharp, Jiri Kylian, Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin and rising (at the time) talents Jeremy James, Wayne McGregor, Javier de Frutos.
In 2004 Steven joined the British Council where he worked as a projects manager and advisor for drama and dance with responsibilities for Western Europe, Latin America and Southern Africa. Projects he developed included a showcase for Western European programmers and directors of Britain’s most innovative dance makers – UKMoves – in Roubaix, France and a showcase of UK artists working in unusual spaces – S.P.A.C.E.UK – in Gijon, Spain.
In 2008 Steven was appointed Executive Producer of Pacitti Company and SPILL Festival of Performance, the UK’s largest artist-led festival of experimental theatre and Live Art, with events being staged in venues across London, including Barbican, Southbank, Soho Theatre, Shunt Vaults, Soho Square and Shoreditch Town Hall.
Steven currently runs the Nightingale Theatre in Brighton, a small development and residency space and 50 seat theatre. He works as assistant to Christopher Bruce, setting his pieces on companies in Europe and America. He also works freelance as a creative producer, mentor, teacher and consultant.
