Max Key is a graduate of ‘Theatre and Visual Arts’ at University of Brighton and further trained on the National Theatre Directors’ course. He is based in London, UK and works across theatre, film and opera. He has made work for Royal National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Lyric Hammersmith, Arcola Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Royal Haymarket Theatre.
His theatre directing credits include ‘Cymbeline’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ , including Congreve’s ‘The Way of the World’ ‘Road’ , Coward’s‘Private Lives’ and Britten’s ‘The Turn of the Screw’ and ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ , as well as more contemporary pieces as ‘God of Carnage’ (Yasmina Reza), ‘The Knowledge’ (John Donnelly), ‘Redemption over Hammersmith’ (David Watson), ‘Cardiff East’ (Peter Gill)
He has worked as assistant director with Peter Gill on ‘The Voysey Inheritance’ (National Theatre), with Tim Albery on ‘The Flying Dutchman’ (Royal Opera House) and with Francesca Zambello on ‘La Bohème’ (Royal Albert Hall).
Max has taught at most UK drama schools including The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, LAMDA, Mountview, etc...
Recently, he has been developing a new play at the National Theatre Studio. In February 2015, Max Key will be directing Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at the Royal Opera House.
