A well-known poster designer, illustrator and muralist, (Alfred) Clive Gardiner was trained at the Slade School of Fine Art (1909-12) and the Royal Academy Schools (1913-14). Following the First World War he trained as an art teacher before teaching at Brighton School of Art.

Jane Pavitt was the University of Brighton Principal Research Fellow in Design at the Victoria & Albert Museum from 1997 until 2009. Her work focused on later 20th century and contemporary design, and particularly on strategies for presenting design through museum exhibitions and collections. She was the curator of Cold War Modern: Design 1945-70 staged at the V&A in 2008.
Addison Cresswell was a highly successful comedy agent credited with steering the careers of stand up "alternative' comedians into mainstream radio and television during the 1980s.

3D design tutor Sean Hetterley, was warmly remembered by colleagues for his murals at the annual Pottery Party.

Native of Brighton and a teacher at Brighton School of Art in the 1960s, Raymond Briggs trained at the Wimbledon School of Art and the Slade. Since 1957 he has been an illustrator and writer, mainly of children’s books but also adult political satire, stage plays and radio plays, producing iconic work including "The Snowman" and "When the Wind Blows."
Julien Macdonald studied fashion knit wear at The University of Brighton, which lead to him receiving a scholarship for the Royal Collage of Art. His creative vision has inspired international acclaim for injecting a high dosage of glamour back into the fashion industry.
A highly respected topographical landscape painter, Charles Knight was an important figure in Brighton School of Art over many decades. He attended Brighton School of Art (1919-23) where he was particularly influenced by painter Louis Ginnett and architect John Denman.
Stuart Morgan's critical writings established him as a leading writer on the art of the 1980s and 1990s. Travelling widely in Europe and the United States, he was widely admired by many artists as a result of his sensitivity to, and careful interpretation of, their opinions.

Professor Bruce Brown retired from the university in January 2016, having been Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, former Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and a Professor of Design. Artist and writer Mikey Cuddihy uses autobiographical references in a struggle for harmony between the romantic vision of the artist and the reality of the individual. She often scales up intimate notes and sketches. Major exhibitions have shown her biro drawing, collage and paper cut-out work.
Sculptor Tom Grimsey worked to integrate large-scale art projects into the fabric of urban regeneration. These ranged from monumental sculptures animated by sequenced fibre-optic lighting to more intimate, place-shaping landscapes to large steel climbing sculptures.
I joined the History of Design BA programme in 1984. In academic terms, this was a new subject that set out to explore the meanings and role of things in the modern world. On the pages of glossy design magazines, this meant chic objects by stars, but my tutors were very keen to expand the ‘canon’.
Richard Slee’s work is intrinsically concerned with the domestic interior. There are references to the decorative, the ornamental and the symbolic, both from the past and our contemporary culture. He has established an international reputation as an artist and designer.

Internationally acclaimed bookbinder Jenni Grey has been President of Designer Bookbinders and has regular contracts to bind the Mann Booker winning novel. She won the Sir Paul Getty Bodleian Bookbinding Prize in 2009. She works with materials such as wood and metal, and techniques such as embroidery.
Book illustrator, painter and sculptor Juliet Kepes studied at Brighton School in the later 1930s. In the early 1950s Juliet began writing and illustrating children’s books, the first of which was Five Little Monkeys (1952). With connections to the Bauhaus movement, Juliet appeared in LIFE Magazine, and worked on a number of public projects.
Louis Ginnett (1875-1946) was a painter primarily of portraits and interiors, a mural painter and a designer of stained glass. He exhibited widely in his lifetime, including at the Royal Academy, and was one of the British artists selected to be exhibited by the British Council in 1912 in Venice.
Having a long association with Brighton, distinguished artist and illustrator John Vernon Lord was appointed Professor of Illustration in 1986, then Professor Emeritus. His picture book "The Giant Jam Sandwich" (1972) has become a classic while his illustrated edition of The Nonsense Verse of Edward Lear (1984) won two national awards.
