Internationally renowned for her innovations in screendance, Professor Liz Aggiss is a performer, choreographer and film-maker. She was a teacher and researcher at the University of Birghton for many years, developing the institutions reputation for performance, particularly screen dance.
Educated at Brighton School of Art in the early years of the Second World War, André Amstutz became an animator for Gaumont British (GB) Animation, before developing his career on a number of professional skills, including art directing for a number of leading British advertising agencies, poster designing and the prolific illustration of children’s books.
"At Brighton my studio was in Tichbourne Street but I was asked to cover for a colleague. I moved into the wood studio and worked there in order that it could stay open for the students. During those three years I made the boardroom table for Templeton College Oxford (50 panels veneered on the old college vacuum press), most of the furniture for one of the Roxy Music band members and won the Sunday Telegraph Craftsman of the Year award.
Alan Baker was a student of Graphic Design and Illustration from 1973-76. He taught on the foundation course and the Narrative illustration MA courses in its early days and spent seven years teaching part-time on the BA(Hons) Illustration course.
Hand-weaver, artist and teacher, Barker moved to Brighton in 1959. Her silk and wool abstract hangings were shown in the exhibition ‘Weaving for Walls’ at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1965. She showed her work with the Brighton Phoenix Group from late 50s to 1982.
Barry Barker worked within the contemporary visual arts as a curator, writer and director of both publicly and privately funded arts organisations, predominately working directly with artists leading to many significant exhibitions.
The childrens’ author and illustrator, Ian Archibald Beck studied at Brighton College of Art during the mid-1960s. In addition to his numerous children's books, Beck is also well known for his cover illustration for Elton John's, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album which was released in 1973.
John Bellany, CBE, is an eminent Scottish painter born in 1942 in Port Seton, into a Calvinist family of fishermen and boat builders. As a child Bellany spent a great deal time with his grandparents in Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders, which later informed much of his work.
The dominant British silversmith in the second half of the twentieth century, Gerald Benney was born in 1930 in Hull. His early years were spent in Brighton, studying at the Art College (1946-48) where his father, the painter E A Sallis Benney, was Principal. Gerald was taught silversmithing by Dunstan Pruden,
Derby-born John Biggs was an educator and prolific illustrator and author, writing more than twenty books on various aspects of illustration, lettering, typography and calligraphy. He was Head of Graphic Design at Brighton from 1951 to 1974.
William Bond was Head Master of Brighton School of Art from 1905 until his sudden death in 1918. An accomplished painter in both oils and watercolours, he had been a pupil teacher at the School prior to undertaking further artistic training in Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy.
Born in Margate in 1901, pioneering potter and teacher Norah Braden was the daughter of a lay preacher. Intensely musical as well as artistic, Braden learned to play the violin and was talented enough to reach concert standard; she considered studying music but declined an offer from the Royal College of Music.
Native of Brighton and a teacher at Brighton School of Art in the 1960s, Raymond Briggs trained at the Wimbledon School of Art and the Slade. Since 1957 he has been an illustrator and writer, mainly of children’s books but also adult political satire, stage plays and radio plays, producing iconic work including "The Snowman" and "When the Wind Blows."
Starting with the most intimate of design objects, jewellery, I made pieces to be worn next to the body, to be handled and changed by the handling. This led to using clothing forms, objects that followed or deviated from the human form, and which acted as metaphor for a person. At the same time, I started to work with choreographers, making garments and sets for dance.

Helen Chadwick studied on the sculpture course at Brighton Polytechnic from 1973 to 1976. She went on to complete an MA at Chelsea, and then quickly became a kind of proto-yBa (young British artist), making installations addressing the power/gender relations inherent in specific environments. She gained celebrity with her autobiographical installation Ego geometria sum (1982-4)
Born in 1933 and educated at Brighton Grammar School and Brighton College of Art (1949-1954), the artist and teacher David Chapman played an important role in the development of several aspects of the School of Art.

After registering as an architect, David Clews spent ten years in practice before becoming a full-time academic. He joined the University of Brighton in 2000, as a Principal Lecturer, to lead the Academic Programme in Architecture & Interiors.
From 1946 until his early death in 1976, Leslie Cole taught at Brighton College of Art (later Polytechnic) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London. At the former he worked closely for many years with John Vernon Lord teaching drawing to graphic design and illustration students.
