Throughout her career, Jill Seddon was a pioneer and innovator in Design History as a field of academic enquiry, with major achievements in pedagogy and research, working in the field of women designers, craft design, public sculpture and urban development.
Louis Ginnett (1875-1946) was a painter primarily of portraits and interiors, a mural painter and a designer of stained glass. He exhibited widely in his lifetime, including at the Royal Academy, and was one of the British artists selected to be exhibited by the British Council in 1912 in Venice.
As a leading illustrator, wood engraver, painter, author of many books, teacher, and designer for posters, ceramics and glass, Clare Leighton enjoyed a distinguished career on both sides of the Atlantic.
Karen Norquay led the University of Brighton's provision of arts as Head of School for many years. She is a practising photographer both in the fields of research and editorial photography. Her editorial work explores the still life genre from conforming to the traditional aesthetic conventions to challenging its language and form.
Justin Todd was tutor in illustration at Brighton College of Art in the 1960s. His work has included historical and book illustration.

After registering as an architect, David Clews spent ten years in practice before becoming a full-time academic. He joined the University of Brighton in 2000, as a Principal Lecturer, to lead the Academic Programme in Architecture & Interiors.
Alan Davie was a painter, poet, jazz musician and jewellery designer.
London’s Tate Gallery described his canvases for an exhibition at Tate Modern as “the result of an improvisatory process that the artist relates to his love of jazz”.
"In January 1979 I was appointed as Head of Fashion and Textiles at Brighton, moving to Courtaulds as Design Director in 1985. Two years later I was head hunted by Next to head up interiors and in 1989 I became Professor and Head of Fashion and Textiles at the Royal College of Art."
Chris Riddell studied Illustration at Brighton Polytechnic. He has drawn covers for Punch, Economist, New Statesman and Literary Review. and is Political Cartoonist on the Observer newspaper.
Laurence Scarfe worked in wide range of visual disciplines: book and magazine illustration, poster and wallpaper design, mural painting, fine art and ceramic decoration. He taught at the Central School of Art from 1945 to 1970, followed by a decade at Brighton Polytechnic, lecturing on the history of illustration and graphic design.
Starting with the most intimate of design objects, jewellery, I made pieces to be worn next to the body, to be handled and changed by the handling. This led to using clothing forms, objects that followed or deviated from the human form, and which acted as metaphor for a person. At the same time, I started to work with choreographers, making garments and sets for dance.
Educated at Brighton School of Art in the early years of the Second World War, André Amstutz became an animator for Gaumont British (GB) Animation, before developing his career on a number of professional skills, including art directing for a number of leading British advertising agencies, poster designing and the prolific illustration of children’s books.
Realist painter Sylvia Sleigh was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Women’s Caucus for Art shortly before her death in 2010. Celebrated for her portraiture and male nudes, she "turned traditional portraiture on its head by presenting the male nude posed as a reclining Venus or odalisque." The Times, Oct 2010.
A highly respected topographical landscape painter, Charles Knight was an important figure in Brighton School of Art over many decades. He attended Brighton School of Art (1919-23) where he was particularly influenced by painter Louis Ginnett and architect John Denman.
Frederick Charles Herrick was a leading graphic artist following the First World War, having trained at Leicester School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. He taught at Brighton for many decades.
"1963. I am 31, a London County Council architect commuting to Brighton to teach one day a week in the School of Architecture first year, up in the attic studios of the old College of Art, Grand Parade. "The air is heady, the floors paint covered. We are indeed all collegiate, students, technicians and tutors together, painters, illustrators, sculptors, architects, bound by a striving for Design."
Most widely known for his archaeologically informed visual reconstructions of early historical settlements which did much to popularise historic sites and buildings, Alan Sorrell worked in a variety of artistic disciplines from large scale murals to book illustrations, as well as a period as a commercial artist after the First World War
Taught at first by David Bomberg, Creffield went to the Slade 1957-61. His work is held in a number of collections including the Tate Gallery, Arts Council England and the Government Art collection.
Designer Anna Bullus studied 3D Design BA(Hons). Her work inspired by a passion for recycling and sustainability
