Exhibits from more than 500 students transformed the Faculty of Arts’ Grand Parade campus into the biggest gallery in the South-East. Displaying over two buildings and three-floors worth of gallery space, over 15,000 visitors discovered the work of the class of 2011: perhaps taking the opportunity to commission work or compile a collection before students emerge as leading lights in their chosen discipline.
For exhibiting students the graduate show is the public climax to their years of study and the beginning of an exciting future. The class of 2011 followed alumni such as Turner Prize winners Rachel Whiteread and Keith Tyson, artist Alison Lapper, and fashion designers Julien Macdonald and Barbara Hulanicki.
Thanks to 16 consecutive years of sponsorship from Brighton-based solicitors Burt Brill & Cardens, the graduate show is one of the city’s cultural highlights. It boasts an ever-popular programme of events including a fashion and textiles catwalk show, family day, undergraduate open days and student prize giving ceremony - the 2011 graduate show prizes were awarded to students from right across the Faculty of Arts.
The build-up to the show included a series of video shorts by students Matt Lyver and Mark Matcham. Watch out for the whole series.
