Second-year 3D Design student Craig Barrow won this year's Designing for the Future prize and reflects below on his experiences up to this point as he looks forward to starting his third year.
I studied Art, Product Design, Physics and Photography at A-level, then Art Foundation Diploma at South Notts College in Nottingham.
Yes.
The free-ness and great contemporary teaching on the course; good workshops; interesting place to be.
What is the best thing about studying at Brighton?
A great creative community in an environment which is small enough to not be too daunting. Great teaching and opportunities within and external to the university.
Yes, if not exceeded. I am doing more and involved with more now then I thought I would be two years ago.
Learning the things that aren’t necessarily written into the syllabus but that I have learnt through tutors, study trips - particularly Milan Design Week 2011. Also outings, such as networking skills, exhibition set-up and organisation and generally ‘putting yourself out there’.
Experimentation; problem solving; thinking ahead; thinking in the present; thinking in the past; considering ideas; communicating with staff and peers over ideas.
Don’t come knowing what you want to do - it will hold you back. Be free and experimental. It’s a lot of hard work.
Staying committed and hard working even when things are not going right and I have had many things on my mind.
Travel a bit; do design shows; get internships; be a designer?
