technē Conflux: Writing & Art, Anne Boyer

This workshop is offered as part of a TECHNE Conflux, an extended training, development, exhibition or performance programme which aims to enhance research or intellectual skills, or facilitate the sharing of expertise amongst doctoral students in the arts and humanities.

The Writing & Art programme put together for technē doctoral students and associates. A series of four workshops taking place across the University of the Arts London and Royal College of Art, it focuses on writing in relation to artistic and exhibitionary practice. Each day-long workshop will bring in a guest to consider the specific challenges that artworks, artistic practice and exhibitions present for discursive analysis, and the differing approaches to writing embedded in this problem. These workshops will be supported by a tutor to develop students' writing skills.

For the first event, US poet and essayist Anne Boyer will use 'No', published in her A Handbook of Disappointed Fate (2018), and 'Not Writing' and 'What is "Not Writing"?', published in her Garments Against Women (2016), as a starting point for the discussion. Reading materials are short and will be circulated in advance.

 

Anne Boyer's poetry books include The Romance of Happy Workers, My Common Heart, and the 2016 CLMP award-winning Garments Against Women. Her newest book is A Handbook of Disappointed Fate, a collection of ten years of essays, fables, and ephemera, and a memoir of ideas about cancer and its disabling aftermath, The Undying, is forthcoming from FSG (US) and Penguin (UK) in 2019. Boyer is the winner of the 2018 Cy Twombly Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Art and a 2018 Whiting Award in nonfiction and poetry. She is an Associate Professor of the Liberal Arts at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Judith E. Wilson Poetry fellow at the University of Cambridge for 2018–19.
