Training and Support

Techne aims to make a wide range of training opportunities across its member universities available to all students, who are encouraged to attend those that suit their needs and location.

Techne recognises the need for training at four levels: individual training specific to a student’s needs; subject-level training in the discipline area; interdisciplinary training and generic training which is relevant to any doctoral student from any discipline. The biannual Techne Student Congresses emphasise interdisciplinary training and are a great opportunity to network with other students. Through these events Techne students are encouraged to take learning and practice developed in one discipline and apply it to their own research area.

The training programme includes:

  • A ‘Welcome Event' for new students in October
  • A student-organised conference in November
  • Two residential Congresses in January and June/July
  • Funding for students to develop their own events, training activities and work placements
  • Ongoing assessments of training needs conducted with supervisors
  • A Techne Learning and Development Log using Inkpath
  • A range of engagement opportunities with Partners.

Students from outside of Techne are welcome to attend Techne events where space is available. Please contact techne@rhul.ac.uk if you are interested in attending any of our events.

We want to ensure that all of our events are as inclusive and accessible as possible. If you have any accessibility needs for any Techne training or events that you are going to attend, please email techne@rhul.ac.uk with more information and we will be happy to help with this. Techne is in the process of establishing an EDI committee who will develop a more detailed policy in the coming months.

If you are applying for event funding, take a look at our environment and events page for advice about how we aim to make Techne training more environmentally friendly.
