Techne Congress: The In Between

27th Jan 2020 - 28th Jan 2020

Please register on Eventbrite for the January Congress by the 3rd January.

The-In-Between-Publicity

The theme of our Congress is the ‘in between’. ‘In between’ disciplines first and foremost, as many technē students work at the interface of two or more disciplines. Then ‘in between’ doctoral study and professional practice, as many of you are either continuing your career-based artistic practice while also theorising it in your thesis. Also ‘in between’ whatever previous qualifications you may have obtained, typically a Masters degree, and now the PhD. And finally being ‘in between’ means being in a place which is also a journey as you work through theories, ideas, data, arguments, positions.

We have listened carefully to feedback from previous Congresses. As a result, we have not tried to articulate sessions artificially around the idea of the ‘in between’. On the contrary, the majority of our sessions, as you and previous technē students have suggested, are practical, and intended to support you constructively and pragmatically in your journey with us. We have also included sessions, as we did in the last Congress, that are open, during which you can meet in subject groups or sit in quiet rooms to give you the opportunity to reflect on your journey both as an individual and as part of a learning community. And, finally, in between the formally constituted sessions, we have devoted the afternoon of your first day with us to being outside of the Congress with a range of activities either on campus or in town. These activities, in between the other sessions, are there to give you time to breathe, reflect and network.
