Being able to communicate our research clearly and simply, to a range of audiences is an important skill for us all to develop.
Do you need to develop diagrams for your thesis? Do you want to produce a poster of your research? Do you want to generate an infographic about your work to help communicate it more widely?
This series of online workshops will introduce you to the ideas and skills needed to produce excellent diagrams and infographics for your research and will offer you professional support to develop one high quality project. When you sign up you need to be able to attend all four dates.
Led by London graphics-design agency Bison Bison, the four online workshops and support sessions will explore Design principals; the tools and resources needed to develop good diagrams and infographics, offer a one-on-one personal feedback session to help hone ideas and then a group discussion session to reflect together on the diagrams/ infogprahics produced.
By the end of the series you will have
a) gained important knowledge and skills needed to develop good graphics for your research
b) have experimented with programmes to enable you to produce graphics
c) received advice from skilled professionals on a particular diagram/ infographic you develop
d) gain group feedback from your peers on your final design
Session 1 – Design principals (Friday 4th September, 10am to 12.30pm)
Each participant is asked to bring two examples of good infographics and one bad example and talk about why they chose those examples.There will be group discussion regarding principals – what qualities make for a good infographic? Why do some fail?
The session will include a presentation led by the tutor on different types of infographics and information design.
Session 2 – Using tools and resources (Friday 11th September, 10am to 12.30pm)
This session will include practical demonstration of Adobe Illustrator - specifically, relevant tools that are commonly used in the creation of infographics. There will be an overview of other creative tools available and resources for further learning.
Session 3 – Personal technical help (Friday 18th September)
One-to-one 30 minute sessions bookable throughout the day. You will have the opportunity to get 1-on-1 technical help from the tutor in working on your own infographic.
Session 4 – Group discussion (Friday 25th September, 10.30am to 12pm)
Presentation to the group of each student’s response to the brief with group discussion.
