Curating and the Arts & Humanities: A Workshop on Exhibitions as Subjects and Methods for Research

There is a growing interest in exhibitions and curating amongst arts and humanities research students, as part of a rising interest in both practice research and curatorial career opportunities. Exhibitions are increasingly understood as key platforms for testing and communicating research both during the PhD and following completion. This is not yet matched by opportunities to develop first-hand knowledge and understanding to critique and curate exhibitions.

“Curating and the Arts & Humanities” has a two-fold aim: to enhance students’ skills in interpreting and writing about exhibitions; and to offer them an opportunity to reflect on the rationale, methods and tools involved in curating exhibitions. Drawing together curatorial expertise from the Techne community, this will also provide an opportunity to connect online with those undertaking curatorial research or pursuing careers in this area.

The online workshop will include: introductory session; discussion of readings distributed in advance; breakout groups; presentations by professional curators: Dr Lucia Savi (V&A), Lucia Pietroiusti (Serpentine Galleries) and Professor Carol Tulloch (UAL)

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The event is for arts and humanities research students who are either: undertaking exhibition-based practice doctoral research; examining exhibitions as part of their doctoral research; interested in curating exhibitions as part of their doctoral research methodology; interested in a research career in museums, galleries or curating. No curatorial experience is necessary.

The day is open to students who are Techne studentship holders and other PhD students at Techne’s partner universities: Royal Holloway, University of London; Kingston University; Royal College of Art; University of the Arts London; University of Brighton; University of Roehampton; University of Surrey; University of Westminster; Loughborough University London; Brunel University.

 

REGISTRATION PROCESS

We have capacity for 25 students, and places will be offered on a first-come first-serve basis. Please send the following information to Giuliana Pieri (g.pieri@rhul.ac.uk) by 11th December (midnight UK time). You will be contacted by 18th December if a place is available for you.
