18th Mar 2021 10:00am-4:30pm

This one-day interactive course will take you from the basics of excellent public engagement through to the process of planning your own activities and events to share your research with wider publics, whether in person or in the virtual world. It will help you to think about the methods and formats which will work best for you so that you can confidently begin communicating your work to non-specialists. You’ll also learn about the relationship between public engagement and research impact, and gain an insight into how to identify, evaluate and record the impact of your work.

The course will be delivered via Zoom.

The trainer, Dr. Emma Bridges, is a specialist in public engagement and impact with a background as a researcher and educator in the humanities. This workshop has been organised by Liz Gloyn at Royal Holloway - please contact Liz with any queries.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • understand what is meant by ‘public engagement with research’ and how this relates to other public-facing activities like outreach and widening participation, as well as to research impact
  • identify potential target audiences and community partners for public engagement
  • understand how factors such as budget, location, and your own skills and interests can help you to decide on a format for public engagement activities
  • access key tools and resources for planning your own activities and events
