Speculative Fiction and Fantasy: the environment, feminism, and futurity

Sini Silveri and Ama Josephine Budge come together to read fantasy and speculative fiction that grapples with futurity, the environment, and the possibilities of queer feminisms.

'Speculative Fiction and Fantasy: the environment, feminism, and futurity' is led by Dr Prudence Bussey-Chamberlain (Royal Holloway University of London). It is part of the Techne Conflux series ‘Queer Feminist Currents’, a two-year collaboration amongst researchers at the University of Roehampton and Royal Holloway, University of London. A series of research events are designed to provide a framework for interrogating key points of convergence and tension in contemporary queer, intersectional feminist and gender studies, decolonial critique, as well as theory and practice as interrelated. Biographies
Ama Josephine Budge is a Speculative Writer, Artist, Curator and Pleasure Activist whose praxis navigates intimate explorations of Blackness, aesthetics, ecology and feminism. Ama’s speculative fiction and essays have been commissioned and published internationally, including by Anathema Spec from the Margins, the Architectural Review, the Feminist Review, Aperture, Whitechapel Gallery and more. Ama was nominated for the 2021 Arts Foundation Environmental Writing Award, and is working on her first novella, a speculative meditation on sentient trees, queer erotics and isolation. Ama is the recipient of the 2020-23 Local, International and Planetary Fictions Fellowship with Curatorial Frame (Helsinki) and EVA International (Limerick), 2020 Keith Haring Fellow in Art and Activism at Bard College, New York, and is in the final stages of her PhD at Birkbeck University of London.
Sini Silveri (she/they) is a Finland-based writer and multidisciplinary artist. Born in northern Finland in 1987, she now lives in Helsinki. Silveri has a degree in dance and somatics studies and in environmental history. Their first Chapbook, Muovailen muovipussista kaunista kahvaa, was released by Zäp Books in 2016. The second one, The private interest of each looking at themselves in a trashy rosy life, was released in a same-named solo exhibition in Hamburg in 2020. The poetry book Titaanidisko (Poesia, 2020) won Kalevi Jäntti's literature Prize for young writers and has lately been translated into Spanish by Pitzilein books. As an essayist, she has been dealing with feminism, post-capitalism in modern art, improvisation and experimentalism, and the affects of precarization. For the love of New Narrative Silveri is practicing translating texts into Finnish. Currently, she is working on New York City 1979 by Kathy Ackers. Lately came out the co-translation of Dodie Bellamy's essay When sick rules the world. Silveri has done poetry readings around Europe and Russia at punk events and poetry festivals. Often with their SG or with a band Apurit, Internet, or Suut. As a poet and mover, she has acted in various films like Wild is the wind (2019) by Sorbus collective. Currently, she is working on a group performance about Karl Marx's Theses on Feuerbach.
