Fundamentals of Academic Writing

With an increased workload often characterising 2nd year + PhD life, an obvious question to ask is: How do I improve my writing strategies to help me with my PhD and beyond? This practical, pragmatic and interactive three-module course starts by laying a foundation for your academic writing by showing you how academic English ‘works’ and explores a fundamental principle to create clear writing.

Module 2 demonstrates effective strategies for drafting your PhD or an article through its 1 hour Writing Work Out and highlights a simple formula to help you write effective Introductions, Conclusions and Abstracts efficiently.

Module 3 builds on your drafting skills by showing you effective strategies to edit your work to make it shine.

Join trainer Matt Lane and a group of students from across Techne and two other AHRC DTPs (Midlands 4 Cities and North West Consortium) for this three-day intensive to focus on your academic writing. 

Trainer: Dr Matt Lane, Co-Director, The Researcher Development Partnership, Cambridge

Matt is an international researcher developer, facilitator and consultant. From 2010-18, he was a Researcher Developer at the University of Cambridge, where in 2017, he was formally recognised for his ‘outstanding contribution’ to the development of early career researchers. Now a Director of The Researcher Development Partnership, Cambridge, and based on his own experiences of doing a PhD, his purpose is to help alleviate the stress of research and so specialises in researcher Wellbeing, Writing and Leadership development. He holds the CIPD’s Certificate in Learning & Development and practitioner accreditation in MBTI and Belbin Team Roles.
