Writing Workshop: Stylish Academic Writing

14th Nov 2018 10:30am-4:30pm

Location: Royal Holloway, 11 Bedford Square, London.

Academic writing doesn't have to be turgid prose that is agony to read (and to write). Complex ideas and abstract concepts can be expressed in simple language that anyone can understand This session is for students who aspire to write clearly and elegantly in their discipline and who would like to improve their style. In the workshop, students explore:

  • how they see themselves as a writer (their 'writer identity')
  • what academic writing is, and what it's for
  • what 'good' looks like, and how this varies by discipline
  • common pitfalls in structure (at all levels) and language
  • top tips to elevate their style

On registration, every participant will be asked to send a sample of their academic writing (500 - 1,000 words).

This workshop will be run by Anne Wilson. Anne has a background in journalism (features) and corporate communication (scripts, speeches, screen media copy), combining her writing with facilitating writing workshops in HE. She was Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Brunel University for three years, and now runs workshops on academic writing and professional communication for postgraduates and staff at Brunel and other universities. She also coaches students for the 3MT competition (won by Brunel in 2017). She has recently collaborated with the Brunel Occupational Therapy department to investigate what kind of feedback helps students to improve their academic writing.
