The University of Brighton hosts two acclaimed authors for a discussion on the hidden world of the beautiful game.
Come and learn about the crises at the heart of FIFA and the ways Brazilian history and culture is moulded around football.
Professor Alan Tomlinson, author of FIFA: The Men, the Myths and the Money is joined by David Goldblatt, author of The Ball is Round and Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil through Soccer.
Their expert discussion will include the results of behind-the-scenes investigations of the industry, revealing the use of football by ruthless and, sometimes corrupt, officials, and its expansion under the influence of commerce. Also, the emotional, political and cultural issues that come together for football players and fans the world over, particularly in Brazil.
Supported by Big Screen Brighton and Albion in the Community, there will be a collection for football charity Homeless FA at the event.
Time: 6-8pm
Venue: The Sallis Benney Theatre, Grand Parade, Brighton, BN1 OJY
“the failure of England to play in a World Cup final let alone win one since [1966], makes the past ever more golden as the present becomes ever more unpalatable.” David Goldblatt, 'Another Kind of History', in Rinke, S and Schiller, K., eds. The FIFA World Cup 1930-2010, 2014
David Goldblatt, journalist and sports writer is convinced that football cannot be isolated from history, sociology and economics, and that these forces cannot be understood without reference to the most global and wealthy of all sports: "No history of the modern world is complete without an account of football."
Professor Alan Tomlinson is professor of the culture of sport at the University of Brighton. For his book on FIFA he interviewed influential footballing leaders worldwide, and has considered how new and powerful players have emerged in FIFA in the wake of the collapse of empires. Read his post-World Cup Guardian article.
"inspire" at the University of Brighton is a regular series of free lectures designed to bring scholarly work on a range of interesting topics to the widest public audience.
The Homeless FA is England’s national homeless football charity, supporting all initiatives that use football as a means of improving the lives of homeless people in England. We believe that every homeless person has the potential to change their lives positively, and that football can facilitate this transformation.
Now in its third consecutive year, Brighton’s Big Screen brings a huge 100 square ft LED screen to Brighton & Hove seafront, broadcasting live coverage of top sporting events plus a selection of blockbuster movies.
