What is ‘site specific’ work?

Charlie Morrissey is a director/choreographer, performer, teacher, and researcher, and has been working in the field of performance across the UK and internationally for 25 years.
He creates large and small-scale site-specific and theatre and gallery based performance work in diverse locations with professional and non-professional performers. Site based works have included, amongst others: The Palm House in a glass house in Stanmer Park (2005); Where the Land Meets the Sea (2006) in the sea and on the beach in Brighton; Deeptime (2010) a series of works on the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast; and The Tree of Light (2012) with a cast of 1,000 people as part of the Cultural Olympiad in Oxfordshire. Charlie is currently collaborating with Siobhan Davies Dance on several new projects

Nicola Blackwell is a theatre-maker whose work spans performance, design and direction. Nicola was a founder member of Rufus Norris' and Katrina Lindsay's first two companies, Arts Threshold and Wink, and is a member of the experimental theatre collective The People Show, who have been making site-responsive work for over 40 years.With Nick Tigg and Fiona Creese she runs Slot Machine, a company that makes work for theatres and other spaces. As a performer, her work includesMarket Boy (National Theatre), Herge's Adventures of Tintin (Barbican and West End), Perilous Stuff and Strike Gently Away From Body (Young Vic), The Sound Collector (Sheffield Crucible), Mountain Language (Royal Court). Direction includes: The Hit (site specific for Indigo Hotels), and Alfred (Young Vic Shorts. Design Includes: Kipper's Snowy Day (Slot Machine), The Lover, Lady Windermere's Fan (European Arts Theatre), Down By The Greenwood Side (Brighton Festival)

Sara Clifford is one of two Writers in Residence at the University of Brighton this year, along with Clare Best. She has written over twenty five plays, and, since 2012, has focused on writing site responsive work, collaborating with different theatre makers, including actors, musicians, dancers, aerialists, sound and video artists, both professional and non-professional.
