Painting is a language which Colin Day pursues with a passion. Working from his Brighton studio, Colin Day is preparing new work for his one person show at the University of Brighton Gallery, Grand Parade, which runs from Saturday 24th July to 20 August 1999.
Long an admirer of painters Hodgkin, Rothko and Basil Beattie ( the latter being a friend and colleague at Goldsmiths College), Day's own work has been described as luminous and spntaneous with a richness and intensity of colour. Other sources of inspiration are elicited by musicians such as Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Keith Jarret- the last of whom Day admires above all for his willingness to take risks.
Day has a particular love of the American Pacific Northwest landscape and has regularly exhibited in Anchorage, Alaska and Seattle, Washington. His last one person show "A New Path to the Waterfall" was seen at the International Gallery of Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Alaskan painter Graham Dane, says in his introductionto Day's new work, "Colin Day is one of the most courageous and ambitious artists I know....At the heart of his work lies a drive toward discovery and exploration made real in richly painted canvases."
