Between February and November 2006 Brighton Photo Biennial is developing and piloting a model for student learning in the community for 2nd year undergraduates at the University of Brighton. This project will provide professional practice opportunities for students, and enrich the art curriculum in primary schools. It also enables both students and pupils to try things for the first time, take creative risks in a safe and supportive environment, and share the experience of ‘learning together’.
The project extends students’ learning by providing them with direct experience of working as artists with pupils in five primary schools in Hove. The students’ course covers all aspects of working as artists in education including teaching strategies, lesson planning & evaluation, communication skills, organisational issues and health and safety.
Phase 1, which ran over ten weeks through Spring 2006 enabled students to work in pairs alongside teachers, helping pupils create new artwork. Phase 2 will take place from October 2006. The programme encouraged a multi-disciplinary approach that fuses photographic processes with other art forms.
The resulting photographs will be presented across the city at a range of public venues during November as part of Brighton Photo Biennial 2006.
The project aims to test new ways of working with the ambition of developing a sustainable, transferable model of student learning in the community that promotes creative methodologies in teaching and learning. The project will promote students’ professional practice & transferable skills, enabling them to develop experience of being an artist in residence, and of managing community arts projects. It will provide young pupils with the chance to engage directly with student artists, therefore raising aspirations and revealing artists’ processes and ‘real life jobs’.
The original work will be shown at the University of Brighon Gallery 10 - 18 November.
This project is supported by Brighton & Hove City Council
