This exhibition has been arranged as part of a final submission for a PhD at the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts and Architecture, the subject of which is the “Importance of the qualities of the feminine principle in two-dimensional image-making, a journey through visual language.”
The work is arranged in two sections. The first part tells the story of the journey that has been Michaelson’s research. This was a multi-dimensional journey that was at the same time a literal metaphorical, creative, personal/emotional as well as an intellectual journey documented in 16 large sketchbooks. The books record her search for the authentic voice of the feminine principle, and her dawning awareness of a profound relationship between the feminine principle, shamanism and the visual arts. Michaelson’s journey included doing shamanic rituals in Russia and Siberia, and art-work made on location in Morocco and France.
The second section of the exhibition is called “Magic Garden” and includes art-work made on location in Morocco and France as well as a series of etchings created back in England, based on this work.
