Colleagues are warmly invited to attend the preliminary meeting of this new research cluster with theory/practice and industry applications. Gothic Transformations: Theory, Practice, Futures seeks to draw together theory/practice and impact-led researchers interested in a range of critical and creative practices that can be gathered under the broad rubric of ‘The Gothic’. From ‘classical’ discussions around its form, representations and social/scientific ramifications to recent TV, celluloid and videogame renditions, the Gothic remains a central category for critical and creative interrogation, as well as being a contemporary theme within wider research centre and funding opportunities.
The aim of the Gothic Transformations: Theory, Practice and Futures group is to explore the range of texts – literature, film, television, digital media – which can be understood as sharing Gothic characteristics. It will explore ways in which the Gothic has been defined according to different media forms throughout different histories and within different disciplines. Alongside its theoretical applications, practitioners will be invited to consider ways in which their creative endeavours mobilise traditions of the Gothic, and the extent to which they develop its relationship to contemporary culture. We would also be interested in exploring ways in which practitioners can adapt Gothic principles to underpin the creation/mentoring of student production work that could be submitted to wider national/international bodies such as accredited film festivals.
In order to ensure that Gothic Transformations: Theory, Practice, Futures remains as broad and inclusive as possible, the group will encourage the exploration of the Gothic as a mobile mode, applicable across different forms, formations, and national cultures. Some of its areas of interest and exploration will include…
