'Design Talk's is a Faculty of Arts lecture series organised by the Design Research Institute. Each lecture is by a leading designer who will speak about their creative process and ideas concerning design. UK designer Julian Roberts has pioneered a spontaneity in clothing design that has made it possible to think of covering the body by subtracting the form of the body from the cloth. He will demonstrate his innovative twenty-first century methods of shaping a flat piece of fabric to human dimensions with beauty and creative expression.
He has shown collections at London’s Fashion Week, is a filmmaker for SuperSuper Magazine and a consultant to the BBC. Currently he develops his own collections, designing both the form and the engineered surface designs. His film/web/graphics company, JULIANAND, is a leader in defining the visual identity of this century. His lectures, demonstrations and workshops embody the global zeitgeist that now demands that we look at every activity in a new way if we are to meet future challenges.
Julian currently works with eight universities around the world. He is Tutor for Mixed Media Textiles at the Royal College of Art and was awarded a Professorship in 2004 by the University of Hertfordshire, where he founded their new Fashion BA course. He is an accomplished scholar and teacher with an impressive history of classes, lectures and demonstrations given in the UK and throughout Europe and Asia.
