Silvia Mercuriali trained in physical theatre at the Arsenale, Milan. She is best known as one half of the internationally acclaimed experimental theatre company, Rotozaza, creators of theatre, site-specific events and installations since 1999. Their research into instruction-based performances and Autoteatro has enabled them to develop an understanding of writing for unrehearsed participants, without need of previous performing experience or skills . The intention of Autoteatro is to ensure a highly enjoyable and unique experience for both performers and audience members.
From her first show as Rotozaza in 1999 to the latest work as ‘ il pixel rosso’, Silvia has always been interested in the live and resonant every day life; issues on responsibility and action in every day life are always present in her work.
Her theatre work in public spaces focuses on creating pieces that are informed and inspired by the architecture and geography of a place and by the community that inhabits it. Her work places the audience in the role of strangers, encouraging them to look around as if for the first time. She is at present creating a new piece of this nature, with Gemma Brockis called Berlin Nevada.
She also works as a performer and co devisor for visual and site/context specific theatre companies (UK) as Shunt and Clod Ensemble and Inconvenient Spoof.
