A Public Lecture and Documentary Screening by Professor Julian Petley.
The Faculty of Arts at the University of Brighton is delighted to present a public lecture by one of the UK’s leading authorities on film censorship and the moral panic phenomenon.
Julian’s public lecture will examine the links between the 1980s so-called ‘video nasty’ phenomenon, and current social concerns around explicit and unregulated material available on the internet.
The public lecture will also feature a special screening of Jake West’s acclaimed documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape (2010), which Julian was a key contributor to. 'Media Moral Panics: Past and Present' will be chaired by Xavier Mendik, Director of the Cine-Excess International Film Festival and lecturer at the University of Brighton, Hastings campus.
The screening of Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape is courtesy of Nucleus Films and a BBC review of the documentary and the video nasty phenomenon can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvo74rDgOv0
Julian Petley is Professor of Screen Media in the School of Arts, Brunel University and has written extensively on how fears of unregulated film violence often generate wider moral panics within society.
