Making Your Way in the Arts
Talk
The future of the portfolio is changing – employers in the creative industries now expect to see your work online.
Alex Brownless, Co-founder of Arts Thread, the world's leading online creative graduate networking site, spoke to us before his Making Your Way In The Arts event, about the digitisation of portfolios.
Is the paper cv dead in the arts and creative industry?
No- I am a big advocate for paper CV’s as the industry is inundated with emails. The industry is more likely to open a letter than an email.
When should a student start thinking about creating an online portfolio?
Certainly before graduation. The earlier the better.
What are the benefits of having an online portfolio?
The industry can find you at a time and place convenient for them.
How do you make your online portfolio stand out?
Quality of work! Its really important that you kick off with your best work first as this will lead the industry to view you in the first place. The images need to be very strong.
Can your digital footprint damage your future career?
Possibly. The industry will check you out before meeting you in person. They often look at your Facebook page to see what kind of character you are!
You can see Alex speak at the Importance of Online Portfolios event for Making Your Way in the Arts. 9 June 10:00am, Grand Parade.
