Cult Cinema and Rural Excess
Cine-Excess VIII is an annual international film festival and conference, which attracts global filmmakers, scholars, distributors and film-critics.
This year’s event explores the rural excesses of cult cinema, and is a collaboration between the festival and the University of Brighton’s C21: Centre for research in twenty-first century writings.
To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel’s ground-breaking backwoods classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Cine-Excess VIII considers cult representations of the rural space and its inhabitants, analysing the extent to which depictions of the countryside often reveal fascinating issues of class, sexuality, race and regional distinction.
The event features filmmaker discussions, a themed three-day conference and theatrical premieres/exclusive screenings. Cine-Excess is open to the public, who can book screening delegate passes for individual films, or full delegate passes for the conference, lunches and all Cine-Excess screenings. Book Delegate tickets for all events.
CineExcess VIII features guest of honour Jeff Lieberman (Squirm, Blue Sunshine, Just Before Dawn) in conversation with University of Brighton media researcher and lecturer Xavier Mendik.

Cine-Excess comprises of a three day conference alongside plenary talks, filmmaker interviews and 5-7 UK theatrical premieres of up and coming cult releases.
Cine-Excess VIII will consider the wide variety of representations of the cult countryside from a range of differing theoretical and methodological perspectives, while also considering larger national notions of the rural space within film, television, literature, comics and digital media.
A selection of conference papers from the event will be published in the Cine-Excess E-Journal in 2015.
