Beyond the Resistance: Second World War Memory and Forgetfulness in Italian Novels (1960-2000)

Royal Holloway, University of London

Year of enrolment: 2014 -

Supervisor: Professor Giuliana Pieri

In my PhD research I intend to study how the Memory of the Second World War has been represented in Italian novels of the second half of the twentieth century. I will focus especially on the literary representation of events which have been marginalised within the national narration on the war, as like as the lost wars in Russia and Greece. I will work on a vast and heterogeneous body of texts that represents a varied account on Italian contemporary literature. These novels will be analysed through the theoretic concepts of Memory Study a field that is well established in the English speaking world, but that has not been particularly applied to Italian literature. My research aims at better comprehending the evolution of Italian collective memory through the literary representation of the war years.
