Reconciliation in the Basque Country: Examining the impact of gender dynamics in a post-conflict society

University of Brighton College of Arts and Humanities

Year of enrolment: 2015 -

This project seeks to understand the gender dimensions of ‘reconciliation’ as a concept and practice in addressing conflict in the Basque Country. From an interdisciplinary approach, and building on the work completed for my master’s dissertation about women and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, this research aims to map the meanings given to the concepts and practices of reconciliation as a key feature of efforts to secure peace.  This aim will be pursued by employing gender sensitive analysis in a specific context and unique historical moment in the process of conflict transformation. A key objective is to draw conclusions that can inform action to foster peace and which will be usefully applied to other societies recovering from violent conflict. A feminist approach will be taken, which aims to chart a genealogy of hidden, gendered meanings and impacts of ‘reconciliation’ in context. This will contribute to broadening and questioning the conceptualisation of ‘reconciliation’, as an essential step in understanding both its transformative potential and the obstacles that reconciliation processes face.
