Training and Events Funding

There are a number of sources of additional funding for Techne students. (Unfortunately these are not open to Techne Associates, though Associates are of course welcome to participate in the activities).

The information below will help you to understand what might be eligible and how to apply, but if you have any questions please contact Techne administration. Please note that students may only claim travel from their home address as recorded at their institution or from another starting point where the travel costs are lower than those from the home address.

Student-Led Events Funding (applies to all cohorts)

Techne has funding to support Student-led Events. These must involve at least five students from more than one Techne institution. Techne can offer administrative and financial support of up to £1000 for student-led events or initiatives which may include: symposia, performances, workshops, poster days, exhibitions, public engagement events or awaydays.

There are two deadlines for applications through the year to coincide with meetings of the Techne Training Group who will assess the applications. Look out for email updates from the Techne admin team for deadlines.

Applications should be sent to techne@rhul.ac.uk with ‘Student-Led Event Funding Application’ in the subject field. All applications will be acknowledged, and considered at the next meeting of the Training Group.

Travel to Techne Events (applies to all cohorts)

Travel costs for attending Techne events (such as, but not limited to, the Techne bi-annual Student Congresses, Welcome Event, Confluxes, and Techne funded one day training events) can be reclaimed from your home institution using its usual procedure for expense claims. Please reference the name of the event on your expense claim. If you are unsure if the event is a Techne funded event please get in touch with us to check.

If overnight accommodation has been provided but no evening meal, you can claim reimbursement for those subsistence costs (in line with your institution's policy and normally limited to £20). Note that travel costs for students travelling to their home institution are not eligible. Students may only claim travel within the UK and from their home address as recorded at their institution or from another starting point where the travel costs are lower than those from the home address.

For other types of available funding, new Techne students starting their PhD in October 2019 will have a different set of funding opportunities from earlier cohorts because of changes to the AHRC funding arrangements. Please ensure you select the correct guidance page:
