This guidance is for students who were awarded their Techne funding starting between 2014 and 2018. If you began your Techne funding from autumn 2019 onwards, please see here instead.
Research Training Support Grant (RTSG)
RTSG can be used to undertake
study visits, attend conferences and to cover other primary research costs. The
RTSG is administered by Techne member
institutions, and the amounts available and application processes differ
by institution, so please contact your local administrator (as listed through the link)
for details. Note that the RTSG is the 'first port of call' for funding,
and Techne only considers
applications to SS&WP where these fall outside the scope of the RTSG or the
student has exhausted the RTSG available to them.
Study Support and Work Placement Fund (SS&WP)
Techne students can
apply via the Techne Study Support and Work Placement Fund (SS&WP) for up
to £2,000 to support activities such as study visits, research training costs
or conference attendance. The application form is also used to apply for an
extension to maintenance and fee payments for up to six months for
students to undertake work placements or extended skills development
activities of 30 working days or more either in a block or spread over a
number of weeks or months. For further details of eligibility please see
the application form.
SS&WP Applications (SS&WP) are considered
throughout the year by the Techne Training Group. Applications should be sent to techne@rhul.ac.uk
with ‘Study Support Application’ in the subject field. All
applications will be acknowledged.
Applications to the SS&WP
Fund may be made in addition to the AHRC Research Training Support Grant (RTSG)
which is administered by Techne institutions
(see above). It is expected that applications are made to the
Study Support and Work Placement Fund only when they are outside the scope of
the RTSG, or the student has exhausted their allowance of RTSG applications.
Ad-hoc Travel Allowance
Students
have an allowance of £300 per annum to attend training and other non- Techne events at Techne member institutions and Partner organisations. The Ad-Hoc
Travel Allowance can also be used for study trips (for example to libraries,
galleries or archives) where the cumulated cost exceeds £100 in any one year
between the 1st September and 31st August. For
example, if you make ten trips in one year to the British Library costing £15
pounds each you can claim £150 from the Ad Hoc travel allowance.
This
Allowance is in addition to claiming costs for attending major Techne events as described above. Ad-hoc travel expenses should be claimed from the home institution
according to its regulations. The home institution then reclaims the money from
Techne. Students may claim
travel from their home address as recorded at their institution or from another
starting point where the travel costs are lower than those from the home
address. Note that travel costs for students travelling to their home
institution are not eligible.
Please also note that NPIF or CDA Students cannot claim travel to their Partner Organisation.
