Challenges of PhD study

We present a set of films to help applicants and students understand more about what it means to undertake a PhD.

The films on this page offer information to help both applicants and those who have already started their PhD to understand some of the challenges and more complex aspects of the journey.

We spoke to experienced supervisors and students about the supervisory relationship, the viva, academic networking and outreach. We also asked them to outline some of the challenges they've felt so far whilst undertaking their doctoral studies.

How will I build a relationship with my PhD supervisor?

So what is a PhD viva like?

What personal and social challenges will I face as a PhD student?

What academic challenges will I face as a PhD student?

How can I tell people about my PhD research?

How will I get to know other academics while studying for a PhD?
