Interdisciplinary Literacy
Interdisciplinary Literacy: the ability to critique disciplinary cultures and work effectively across disciplines. Roland Tormey, Mags Liddy, Deirdre Hogan
____________________
Solving sustainability problems requires expertise. Often multiple, different types of knowledge have to be brought to bear to address sustainability problems which typically involve chemical, biological, ecological, sociological, economic, legal and psychological aspects. Yet the expertise that is necessary to address such problems can often get in the way of finding solutions: people working in particular disciplines can often struggle to hear and understand the perspectives of those working in other disciplines. For this reason the skills and knowledge which are necessary to enable different disciplines to effectively work together – interdisciplinary literacy – are an integral and necessary part of sustainability literacy.
